“For a woman, coming off fear is like an addict
coming off drugs.” – Vivian Gornick
Last time, we talked about the only “real” fear that counts – the survival based fear. That’s the one that gives you superhuman strength when you’re facing a real threat – like a bear or lion chasing you!
The other five fundamental fears are ego-based. These are the “Fears of Fears,” the memory-induced fears. These “Fears with Attitude” are not inherently programmed into your survival instincts, but fears you’ve picked up along the way. They are learned responses to situations, causing you to avoid scenarios that mimic or remind you of something you either experienced first-hand in your life, or adopted from your ancestry, your parents, or your surroundings.
Top Ten Fears
- Public Speaking
- Confined Spaces
- Public Transportation (especially airplanes)
- Water (especially drowning in it)
Each archetype has her own inherent “special” fear, and we’ll deep dive into each of those next time!
